We think good mental health work is a craft.

It takes training, experience, judgement and a willingness to keep learning. It also takes an understanding that no two people, relationships or organisations are quite the same. At Kaha, our work is grounded in psychology and evidence-based practice, but the way we apply it is thoughtful, considered and specific to the person or organisation in front of us.

We work with individuals, couples and organisations across a broad range of mental health needs. Sometimes that means working with someone through a difficult period in their life. Sometimes it means helping a couple understand patterns they keep falling into. And sometimes it means looking at an organisation and trying to understand what is really happening beneath the surface.

Individuals

Therapy is rarely as straightforward as identifying a problem and finding a solution. People arrive with different histories, personalities, relationships and ways of making sense of the world. Our job is to understand those things properly and work from there.

Our therapists and psychologists work across a range of concerns and therapeutic approaches, including anxiety, stress, burnout, relationships, grief, trauma, identity and major life changes. You don’t need to know exactly what you need before you begin. We spend time understanding what is bringing you in and finding a therapist whose experience, approach and way of working feels right for you.

We also work with couples who are dealing with conflict, communication difficulties, changes in their relationship, trust, intimacy and the patterns that can make two people feel like they’re having the same argument over and over again. Couples therapy isn’t about finding a winner. It is about understanding the relationship itself and figuring out what might need to change.

We care a great deal about the fit between a therapist and a client. A therapist can be exceptionally qualified and still not be the right person for you. Finding that fit is part of our job, and if something isn’t working, we’d rather know and help you find a better way forward.

Organisations

Mental health at work is not something that sits separately from the rest of an organisation. It is shaped by how people work, how teams function, how managers lead, what gets rewarded, what gets ignored and the pressures people are carrying every day.

Our work with organisations starts with understanding those things rather than arriving with a standard mental health programme and asking everyone to fit into it.

We partner with organisations on mental health programmes that can include employee psychological support, leadership and manager support, clinical services, organisational research and insight, and interventions designed around the particular needs of their people. The work might begin with understanding what employees are experiencing, looking at patterns across teams or speaking with leaders about what they are seeing. From there, we can build a programme that addresses the actual problem rather than the most convenient one.

Our organisational research is an important part of this. We speak to people across levels and functions to understand how an organisation is experienced from different perspectives. The aim isn’t simply to produce another survey or report. It is to uncover the patterns that are easy to miss from the top: where pressure is coming from, what people aren’t saying, how managers are coping, where teams are getting stuck and what might make a meaningful difference.

We also work closely with founders, senior leaders and leadership teams. Leadership can be isolating, and the psychological demands of running a company are often very different from those faced by the wider organisation. Our work in this space is confidential, practical and grounded in the realities of the role.

The Kaha approach

We don’t believe good mental health care can be reduced to a formula.

There is a craft to knowing when to listen, when to challenge, when to ask a better question and when to simply give someone the space to work something out themselves. The same is true of organisational work. Understanding people requires more than collecting data; it requires knowing what to look for, asking the right questions and being prepared to sit with complexity rather than rushing towards an answer.

That is what we try to bring to everything we do at Kaha. A strong clinical foundation, experienced people, curiosity about the person or organisation in front of us, and enough humility to know that the obvious answer isn’t always the right one.

Whether you’re looking for a therapist, support for your relationship or trying to understand what is happening within your organisation, you don’t need to arrive knowing exactly what you need. Start with the problem. We’ll work out the rest with you.
